About Neal

Hi there, I’m a San Francisco Chronicle city hall reporter. Since my West Coast arrival in June, I’ve reported front-page stories on everything from the city’s ban on public nudity, landlord-tenant nightmares, campaign drama and the declining financial prospects of the America’s Cup.

Previously, I covered government and politics on Beacon Hill for The Lowell Sun and the Fitchburg Sentinel & Enterprise as part of the Boston University Statehouse Program.

I have a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a minor in political science from Boston University, where I did everything I could to give myself a diverse journalism background. My proudest achievement is working my way up to editor-in-chief at The Daily Free Press, the independent student newspaper at B.U., where I’ve also served as managing editor, campaign beat reporter for Boston’s 2009 mayoral race, opinion page editor and political columnist.

I’ve also reported breaking news and crime stories on the night shift as a Boston Globe editorial assistant, and spent a summer interning for The Worcester Telegram & Gazette. In fall of 2011, I studied abroad in Dublin where I covered music and culture news for Hot Press, the magazine known as “The Rolling Stone of Ireland.”

Please contact me if you have any questions or opportunities. In the meantime, check out my clips for a selection of my published work.
